I heard from the Humane Society today. My kittens have a coccidia infection. It's a pretty common parasite that causes diarrhea. In kittens, who don't have fully developed immune systems, the complications can be severe, so I'm glad I took them in when I did.
I was all worried when I heard they had an intestinal parasite, like maybe it was my fault, like I didn't scrub out the cage thoroughly enough or something. But it turns out the incubation period for coccidia is around two weeks, so they already had the parasite when I got them. Also, sometimes the stress of moving to a new place can cause infected kittens to develop symptoms. Apparently it's not uncommon for people to bring home a new kitten and then have them start showing signs of infection. (source)
I don't want to count my kittens before they're home, but I'm glad they all made it through the night, and that the vets know what's wrong with them and it can be easily treated. I'll feel better when I have them back here, though, which could take a few days. *frets*
I'm hoping I can use this extra time without kittens to do a little more organizing of my room, so there aren't so many random boxes in my closet for kittens to get lost in. It was very hard to find the little lynx-point boy when he fled in there to hide. But I know myself well enough to know that I might not have the energy for organizing, so we'll see.
